FACELIFT

For a fresher, younger looking face.

Facelift surgery may reduce some of the more visible signs of ageing by tightening underlying tissue and smoothing the loose skin on your face and neck. Many people crave the firmer and fresher appearance your face could have as a result of a facelift procedure. A more youthful appearance is only the beginning, as facelift surgery can leave anyone with a heightened level of self-confidence and quality of life.

What is a facelift?

The modern facelift can accomplish either a change in appearance or the more commonly desired effect of a fresh, rejuvenated look without alteration in the normal expression of the face.

The aim of facelift surgery is to make you look as good as possible and there are a number of procedures available that will be tailored to meet each individual patient’s needs/goals.

A lot has changed since the early days of facial surgery and the sometimes over-stretched and unnatural faces that where a result. To produce a more natural look with better quality scars and to avoid an excess of skin
tension, newer techniques have evolved over recent years. These use similar skin incisions,
but involve the dissection and tightening of the suspensory supporting soft tissue structures of the face and neck known as the SMAS.

In the SMAS procedure, the deeper supporting structures of the face and neck are tightened and the skin is gently redraped to give a natural, fresh, rejuvenated appearance with normal facial expression and a smooth jaw line without jowls. The excessive fatty tissue is removed, restoring the neck contour to a youthful look.
A major advantage of these newer techniques is a longer lasting result due to the tightening
of the deep supporting structures of the face and neck. Because the skin is not subject to the same degree of tension, scarring is inevitably less obvious.

Who are the best candidates for the procedure?
The best candidate for a facelift is a man or woman who may have some sagging skin, but whose skin still retains some elasticity. Most facelift patients are in their forties to sixties. However, each facelift is a highly individualised procedure and it is best to consult with Dr. Bezic about your specific situation.

How is it done?

A facelift is usually done under general anesthesia, but can be done under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation delivered into a vein through an IV. The surgery is performed through incisions made in existing skin creases and hair-bearing areas surrounding the ear. The goal is to hide scars as much as possible. The incisions are made in the scalp above the ears. They extend to the front of the ears, continue under the earlobes and curve behind the ears into the hair-bearing scalp. Minimal or no hair is trimmed from the scalp along the incisions. Dr. Bezic may adjust underlying tissue to create a smoother and more defined contour to the neck and jaw line. Excess skin is then removed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens during a consultation for a facelift?

During the pre-operative consultation, Dr Bezic will perform a history and physical examination. During your physical examination, your facial bone structure, underlying skin structure, skin thickness, texture, and elasticity as well as the extent of facial wrinkles and folds will be assessed. This information will be used to formulate a surgical plan and the goals of the procedure will be discussed. Generally, a facelift is a very versatile procedure, and Dr Bezic will explain the techniques that he recommends to obtain the best outcome for you based on your discussions regarding the outcome you wish to achieve.

What age should you be?

Facelift surgery is performed on any individual who is healthy, has positive motivations and a good understanding of what realistic / natural results they can achieve for their unique anatomy.  Most patients who elect to undergo a facelift procedure are typically in their 40’s to 60’s.  One of the largest factors to consider is your anatomy – a procedure will be outlined for you based on your specific needs.

Will my face look “pulled” or “stretched”?

No. The goal of the procedure is to create a natural and effective improvement in the areas of concern.  Dr. Bezic takes great pride when his patients report that friends and family remark “how rested and refreshed” they look or ask if they have “lost weight” or “been on vacation”.

Can I have other facial procedures at the same time?

Facelift patients often have other facial rejuvenation procedures simultaneously with their facelift. These procedures may include, a brow lift, a neck lift or eyelid surgery. It is best to consult with your Dr. Bezic to see whether this is appropriate in your specific situation

Where are the incisions?

The incisions will be based on the customised procedure appropriate for you.  All incisions are designed to be minimal and camouflaged within natural anatomical features. The goal with is to obtain maximal results with minimal surgery.

How long is the recovery process?

This is a surgical procedure and like all procedures recovery time will vary from patient to patient.  After having performed several hundred procedures under local anesthesia Dr. Bezic can honestly give you an estimate of how much time to plan for your recovery so you can plan accordingly.  Our goal is to disrupt your day-to-day function as little as possible so that you may enjoy a smooth, comfortable and safe recovery while getting back to your normal routine as quickly as possible.

The type of procedure you have will determine what to expect in the post procedure time period.  This is surgery so swelling, some bruising and a tightness sensation is to be expected.  During your consultation Dr. Bezic will be able to review the details of the recovery process with you.
